No industry is more sensitive to the quality of service than the food industry. After the farmer harvests it, and before we eat it, our food must travel through the food industry mixmaster. Food processors and manufacturers are the key components in the industry. Large food manufacturers -- those who start creating products with already-processed ingredients -- rarely limit themselves to one food group. However, both processors and manufacturers strive for the right blend of diversification and market expansion to ensure future growth.

But geographic expansion and mega-mergers won't be enough to nurture the food industry if the companies within it fail to address the fact that service is second to none.
